Swimming Pool Self-Control Plan with Gimasur

With the entry into force of the Royal Decree 742/2013, which establishes the technical-sanitary criteria for swimming pool self-control in Spain, a series of new obligations have been established. The main obligation is the mandatory implementation of the Swimming Pool Self-Control Plan Protocol for pools of collective use.

The Protocol establishes the technical-sanitary criteria for water and air quality in swimming pools with the aim of protecting users’ health from potential physical, chemical, or microbiological risks derived from their use.

Swimming Pool Self-Control Plan

The pool owner must have a specific Swimming Pool Self-Control Protocol for their aquatic facility, which must always be available at the pool for maintenance personnel and the competent authority, and must be kept up to date.

The person responsible for compliance with this Royal Decree is the owner (natural or legal person, public or private, or community of owners) who owns the swimming pool.

What types of swimming pools need to implement the Swimming Pool Self-Control Plan?

Royal Decree 742/2013 applies to any public use swimming pool. If your pool is Type 1 or Type 2, you are obligated to implement the Swimming Pool Self-Control Protocol:

  • Type 1: Pools where water-related activity is the main objective, such as public pools, leisure pools, water parks, or spas.
  • Type 2: Pools that act as a supplementary service to the main objective, such as pools in hotels, tourist accommodations, campings, or therapeutic pools in healthcare centers, among others.

Penalties for non-compliance

Not having the swimming pool self-control protocol can result in heavy economic sanctions, such as the temporary closure of the pool, and in the case of summer pools, the aquatic facility may not be authorized to open.
