How to Identify a Cockroach Infestation
Cockroaches are attracted to humid, dark, and warm places where food is available. Feeding is not an issue for them, as they eat anything, including food, paper, plastics, or pet excrement, among others. All types of cockroaches are nocturnal, as they hide during the day and are more active at night when they come out in search of food. For this reason, it is very difficult to see them alive, and it is more common to recognize their presence by the signs they leave behind, such as:
- Cockroach droppings, which appear as black dust.
- Stains in areas of high presence, such as the kitchen and baseboards.
- Presence of eggs (oothecae) and shed skins, as they molt 5-8 times.
- Damage, as these insects attack organic items such as leather or books.
- Unpleasant odor produced by these disagreeable insects.
- Sometimes, it is possible to see them alive in bathrooms and kitchens, especially in the case of the German cockroach, or in basements, in the case of the Oriental cockroach.
Cockroach infestations are very common, so it is advisable to take measures to eliminate them as soon as their presence is known, in order to reduce the health risks that cockroaches can cause.
Types of Cockroaches
In Andalusia, we highlight three species of cockroaches:
- Oriental or common cockroach (Blatta orientalis). They can live indoors and outdoors, especially in gardens with temperate climates, near building foundations, or in the surface part of sewers. They frequent dark and humid places such as drains, basements, and garbage containers. They feed on all types of dirt and decomposing organic matter. Their size can reach up to 30mm and they are dark brown, almost black in color. Female Oriental cockroaches can produce up to 250 eggs per year.
- American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). This is the most common species found. They can reach a size of 35-55mm in length. Typically, they take refuge in sewers, drains, wells, etc., as they seek dark places with high humidity and organic matter in decomposition for shelter. This is why it is very common to find them in restaurants, hospitals, shops, or buildings where there is access to drains and sewers. To prevent the presence of this type of cockroach, it is necessary to avoid the presence of food residues and moisture.
- German cockroach (Blatella germanica). It is one of the most difficult to control and is one of the most common in homes and businesses, as they usually frequent places where there is food and especially in warm, humid, and dark areas. This type of cockroach has a very small size, at most it can reach 15-17 mm in length. In addition, they reproduce very quickly, as a female cockroach can lay more than 300,000 eggs per year. To prevent the presence of this type of cockroach, it is recommended to eliminate food residues and avoid moisture, as well as remove porous surfaces where they like to take refuge, such as cardboard, paper, or wood.
- Brown-banded Cockroach (Supella Longipalpa). This type of cockroach does not require places as humid as the American cockroach does, so they are usually found in drier places, such as homes without air conditioning or offices where large amounts of paper accumulate, providing them shelter. This type of cockroach can grow up to more than 20mm and are brown in color with two bands of lighter color on the wings and abdomen.
Danger of a cockroach infestation
The presence of cockroaches represents a significant threat, as they can seriously affect health by being a vector for diseases. Diseases such as salmonella, leptospirosis, cholera, food poisoning, and typhus. Therefore, they can contaminate and cause serious damage to stored products and goods. Moreover, their visible presence will severely affect your business’s reputation.
They often enter restaurants and food service facilities, and some species can enter through drains or sewer pipes.
Due to the ability of cockroaches to transmit diseases, they present significant risks to food safety in restaurants and food retail establishments.

Can the appearance of cockroaches be prevented?
To prevent the appearance of cockroaches, you must prevent access to food, water, and maintain optimal storage and cleaning conditions. Don’t forget that both your home and your business (damp and dark places, such as basements, garages, and warehouses) can be a perfect source for their development.
How much does the treatment to eliminate cockroaches cost?
One of the main concerns when facing a cockroach infestation is the cost of treatment. Many people often opt for home remedies of lower cost but questionable effectiveness, which causes the infestation to continue reproducing, thus aggravating the infestation.
The cost for cockroach treatment and control will depend on the degree of infestation, the dimensions of the surface to be treated, and the number of sessions needed.
