Rats are carriers of up to a dozen diseases, so detecting and eliminating a rat infestation is key to avoiding serious problems in your business or home.
How do we identify that we are dealing with a rat infestation?
The presence of rats leaves numerous signs that are easy to recognize, among which we highlight:
- Noises they make when running through false ceilings or gnawing on walls or under the floor.
- Presence of rat droppings, which are elongated and pointed, about 10-14mm in length.
- Strong odor, similar to ammonia, especially in closed areas.
- Numerous damages caused by rat teeth, they can even cause fires by gnawing on electrical cables.
- Rat nests or burrows, usually found in warm and hidden places or in gardens.
- Their presence is mainly nocturnal, so you will see these signs the following morning.
Types of rats in Andalusia
In general, in Andalusia we can highlight three main species, which have common characteristics:
- House mouse (Mus musculus)
- Brown or gray rat (Rattus norvegicus)
- Black rat or roof rat (Rattus rattus)
Both species have similar characteristics: Rodents are territorial animals that live in colonies.
Each colony has a dominant male, called alpha, one or more females, several subordinate males, and the offspring from recent litters. Rats, unlike other rodents, create burrows.
In the case of the common or sewer rat, the burrow is underground, and as the population grows, it expands and connects to other hideouts creating a complex network of underground tunnels. In the case of the black rat or roof rat, the burrows are usually located in trees, ceiling beams, attics or cavities in ceilings or walls, and are rarely underground.
The diet of rats and other rodents is basically omnivorous, although there are usually preferences depending on the species. Thus, mice prefer cereal grains, the common rat prefers meat, and the black rat prefers fruit, vegetables, cereals, and nuts.
Their main activity is usually nocturnal and is notable for its incredible agility, being able to enter holes of 6-7 mm, in the case of a mouse, or holes of 20 mm if we’re talking about a rat. Additionally, they are good swimmers and good climbers, able to climb up and down vertical drainpipes.
Dangers of a rat infestation
With their inexhaustible capacity to gnaw, these rodents can ruin large quantities of food and structural elements of the building (electrical wiring, door frames, wooden structures, etc.). The main measure to prevent this is to prevent rats from entering the interior of buildings by blocking entrances and sealing cracks, no matter how small.
Rat activity can constitute a transmission vector for diseases to humans such as rabies, cholera, plague, hepatitis, or salmonellosis. Likewise, they transmit numerous microorganisms lethal such as salmonella, hantavirus, leptospirosis, or Weil’s disease, among others, which means they are a danger to the health of humans and domestic animals.
The transmission of diseases can occur through direct contact via a bite or indirectly through ingestion of contaminated food or water that has been in direct contact with rodents or their excrement such as feces or urine, as they use it to leave a trail to their food source for their companions to find. Additionally, rats also carry other insects such as mites, fleas, or ticks, potentially causing severe allergic reactions.
How to prevent the presence of rodents at home?
– Do not flush food down the toilet, as rodents can access it through the pipes.
– Dispose of garbage in sealed bags and keep containers always closed to prevent access to the interior.
– Close doors and windows properly.
– Place grilles or metal meshes in any open space with access to the exterior.
– Ensure that drains and channels are closed, especially at night.
