This pest is caused by the insect Cimex lectularius, which presents the following essential characteristics for its identification:
- They have an oval and flat shape.
- Their mouth, which is pointed, is used to pierce and suck blood.
- They usually measure between 5 and 6 millimeters.
- The color is usually reddish-brown.
- They can move three to five meters in search of food, moving at a high speed.
They go through three phases during their biological cycle (egg, nymph, and adult), a life that can reach 1 year, laying between 200 and 500 eggs. They have nocturnal activity, so during the day they usually hide in furniture such as the bed frame, nightstands, or picture frames, in textiles like clothing, sheets, or pillows. Anything found near the bed, as at night they are attracted to the CO2 and heat we emit. Depending on the temperature, if it’s below 16 degrees, they will enter a hibernation period until they encounter a suitable temperature.
