At Gimasur Ambiental, we are very pleased to have won one of the largest public tenders for environmental health for Legionella control. In this case, at the UGR (University of Granada) centers.
Public tender for Legionella control at the UGR
We are GIMASUR AMBIENTAL S.L.U., a company from Loja led by our manager, José Antonio Velasco, and we have been awarded one of the most important public contracts in Andalusia for Legionella Prevention and Control.
The University of Granada (UGR) has granted this contract to our company after a bidding process in which GIMASUR competed with various multinational companies, surpassing them technically.
This contract includes the protection of 70 faculties and centers of the UGR, distributed between Granada and Melilla, and has an initial duration of two years, with a value of €476,422.04.
Additionally, there is the possibility of extending the contract for two more years, which could raise the total figure to €952,844.08, almost one million euros.
This project will allow us to continue providing the service we have been carrying out since 2019, consolidating our position as a national reference in the prevention and control of Legionella.
Prevention and control of Legionella
In case you didn’t know, we’d like to inform you that Legionella is a bacteria present in water, which can proliferate between 20 and 50°C. When inhaling these contaminated water droplets, it can cause legionellosis, a disease that can lead to severe pneumonia.
In Spain, Legionella affects about 2,000 people per year, of which around 125 die without knowing it was Legionella, simply diagnosed as pneumonia. That’s why prevention and control of Legionella is so dangerous and so important.
The prevention and control of this bacteria is regulated by the Royal Decree 487/2022, which establishes a series of measures for all installations with the presence of water and aerosolization, except for private homes.
These installations must carry out annual cleaning and disinfection, periodic water analysis, and have a Legionella Prevention and Control Plan (PPCL).
Among the installations affected by this regulation are hot and cold water consumption systems, ornamental fountains, fire-fighting water tanks, sprinkler irrigation, vehicle washing facilities, cooling towers, dental clinics, spas, jacuzzis, and humidifiers.
Health inspections verify compliance with these obligations, and failure to comply can result in fines and, in serious cases, criminal liability.

Our company was founded in 2014 by our manager, José Antonio Velasco, GIMASUR AMBIENTAL S.L.U.
It is a company specialized in Environmental Health services. Our main activity includes pest control, prevention and control of Legionella, wood treatment against xylophages, and cleaning and disinfection of drinking water tanks.
